December Update!
Sports Leader Newsletter – Our Training day
At first she explained what we had to do, we were going to complete a light up button activity. Everyone is waiting to get started and Galley Hill are cheering each other on as everyone scrambled around trying to find the light up buttons. They wait patiently in line while other schools have their turn. This activity showed Sports Leaders that we should help each other and be patient and is a goof chance to show others that too. This is also a good competitive, fun way of learning good sportsmanship. You can also order the buttons 1-4 and your teammate has to call the numbers. All games we played todays are games our sports leaders could set up.
Our next activity was toe taps, but we had to do them quickly moving onto the running man. We all laughed at how silly we look. They then move on to fake boxing so it looks like you are punching or kicking but you are not touching the other person at all! We learnt this is often used in films in fighting scenes. We then went onto Judo where we learnt about the sport and how you can compete competitively.
Our last part was about working together and leadership. They read out the instructions and we set off trying to work together and communicating. They taught us to encourage each other when we were tired and to tell them to keep going and you got this. We learnt as sports leaders we show the importance of resilience.
We are looking forward to showing our new skills and learning with the rest of the school!
September Update!
What is School Games?
The School Games aims to provide every child with a positive experience in an environment where the young person’s motivation, competence and confidence are at the centre of the competition.
What is the vision?
The School Games will continue to make a clear and meaningful difference to the lives of even more children and young people.
What is the mission?
Putting physical activity and competitive sport at the heart of schools and providing more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best.
The School Games consists of four unique types of competition:
- Intra-School Competition
- Local Inter-School Competition
- School Games County Provision/Offer
- School Games National Finals
An intra-school competition is a sporting activity taking place between pupils who attend the same school. For example, this can be in the form of a class vs. class or house activity. These competitions should culminate in an annual School Games Day, or Sports Day, to celebrate a school's sporting success.
A local inter-school competition is a sporting activity taking place between schools from the same area - either as a one-off fixture or as part of a league. These competitions may act as qualifiers for county finals or can be run as developmental competitions or festival events to meet the needs of a local area.
What did Galley Hill achieve last year?
School Games Silver Mark Award
We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the School Games Silver Mark Award for the 2023/24 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success. This year we have many sporting achievements including having two football teams entering the league as well as entering the netball league. Every year group from Reception to Year 6 all took part in external sports festivals ranging from ‘Glow Dance’ to Rugby. Girls in Year 5/6 also took part in the Girls Biggest Football day where over 600 girls took part.
All children competed in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible. As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year. A special thanks to: Miss Penning for her enthusiastic leadership of PE at Galley Hill and for organising so many events for us all to participate in and Miss Barnes for all the voluntary time she gave in the summer term to make tournaments and Sports Day a success.
We look forward to applying once again in 2025!
